Scaling Impact on a Nonprofit Budget: How Asthma Australia Found the Perfect HR Partner

As the nation’s peak body for asthma, Asthma Australia has supported the 2.8 million Australians living with asthma for over 60 years. The organisation is dedicated to ensuring that no one’s life is restricted by this chronic respiratory condition. Through evidence-based advocacy, community education and cutting-edge research, they empower patients to move beyond a reliance on “blue puffers” toward preventative, anti-inflammatory care. By partnering with healthcare professionals and policymakers, Asthma Australia drives systemic change to improve air quality and health equity, helping Australians breathe better and live freely.

The Challenge

Operating as a resource-lean organisation, Asthma Australia needs to ensure all functions are efficient and effective. Following a restructure, the HR function was moved into the Director of Corporate Services’ portfolio. The organisation was looking for a HR business partner to support the critical need for expertise to secure key talent and bolster their overall HR infrastructure with compliance as a focus.

The Solution

Employee Matters recognised that as a NFP, budget matters, and worked to maximise value for the organisation. Employee Matters was initially engaged to fill several critical roles. After seeing the value of our tiered recruitment packages for their first hire, they transitioned to our Recruitment Partner Service. This model allowed them to partner with us on a flexible, ongoing basis, covering multiple vacancies without the burden of traditional success fees.

The Results

After providing specialist assistance with position description, classification and salary bands our team has successfully filled two specialist roles who have integrated well into the organisation and culture of Asthma Australia. This was done within a tight timeframe around Christmas and client and candidate feedback has been exceptional on the process and outcome.

Work started with a health check, identifying the priority work areas for the year ahead. Our Employee Expert partnered with the business to implement the planned work as well as respond to work that came up as part of ‘business as usual’. The work spans from navigating complex ER legislation to refreshing internal policies. Furthermore, our Experts have empowered Asthma Australia’s management through a dedicated focus on leadership engagement and professional training.
