Hot-desking is now common in many Australian workplaces, but not everyone knows the best way to share a desk.
Natasha Hawker, managing director of HR and recruitment firm, Employee Matters, says simple gestures can make a big difference. She suggests introducing yourself to those around you within the first 30 minutes and offering to grab a coffee if you're heading out.
Noise is often a source of tension. Hawker recommends keeping personal calls and conversations low and using headphones when possible. She also says employers should provide cleaning products and personal lockers to help keep desks tidy.
While hot-desking can be disruptive for some, Hawker points out that it can also create opportunities to learn by osmosis from colleagues sitting nearby. She says many people still gravitate to the same desk and that some businesses now allow staff to claim a desk if they are in the office at least four days a week.
Other experts, including organisational psychologist Paula Brough and Australian Services Union secretary Emeline Gaske, say personality and workplace culture also play a role in whether hot-desking works well.
Hawker’s advice if there’s friction: speak to the person directly if you feel comfortable, or raise it discreetly with your manager or HR.
