Purpose Over Paychecks: Why a Strong EVP is Your Best Recruitment Tool

Home » Purpose Over Paychecks: Why a Strong EVP is Your Best Recruitment Tool

July 22, 2026
  • Caroline Ross HR recruitment expert
    Written by Caroline Ross
    Systems & Marketing Expert

Caroline has 13 years of experience as a Recruitment professional, as well as a wide-ranging global career that included 10 years in logistics for the United Nations. Caroline’s deep knowledge of Employee Matters’ HR and Recruitment solutions and internal systems makes her instrumental in supporting our team of Experts to deliver high-quality client experiences.

In the current job market, we’re seeing a fascinating shift. It’s no longer just about the digits on a paycheck; it’s about the soul of the company.

Recently, our team at Employee Matters handled recruitment for two very different but equally purpose driven organisations: an innovative animal health company and a prominent national charity. Despite the differences in their sectors, they shared a secret weapon that made candidates line up: a rock solid Employee Value Proposition (EVP).

The Altruism Factor

During these projects, our Recruitment Experts noticed a compelling trend. Candidates weren't just looking for jobs; they were looking for meaning.

In the case of the animal health brand, we saw candidates willing to leave secure, permanent roles for fixed term contracts just to get a foot in the door. Why? Because the brand stood for something they believed in.

We noted that this altruism is a powerful motivator. When an organisation’s values align with a candidate’s personal mission, those candidates are often willing to forgo a slightly higher salary in exchange for:

  • A sense of contribution to a cause (like animal welfare or social impact).
  • Cultural alignment where they feel their work actually matters.
  • Brand pride that comes from being associated with a respected industry leader.

The RPS Advantage: Efficiency Meets Engagement

A key factor in the success of both the animal health company and the national charity was their use of the Employee Matters Recruitment Partner Service (RPS). By utilising a pre-purchased block of hours rather than traditional percentage based fees, both organisations saw significant cost savings. Because their strong EVPs already attracted a high volume of passionate, engaged applicants, our specialists didn't need to spend dozens of hours ‘hunting’ from scratch. Instead, we used the allocated hours to rapidly screen and vet the existing influx of talent. This streamlined approach resulted in quick, high-quality hires for both clients, proving that when you combine a magnetic brand with an expert partner to manage the volume, you lower your total cost of hire while securing top-tier cultural fits.

If the EVP is So Strong, Why Use Us?

It’s a fair question: If people are banging down your door to work for you, why do you need recruitment experts?

Our Recruitment Lead, Maaike Coates summed it up perfectly when working with a National Sales Manager recently. This manager had an incredible brand and a line of eager applicants, but he also had:

  1. Zero Time: He was busy running a national team, not sifting through hundreds of resumes
  2. No Recruitment Expertise: Identifying a passionate candidate is easy; identifying a high performing, culturally aligned and technically capable candidate is an art form

By partnering with an business like Employee Matters, even companies with the strongest brands can lower their overall cost of hire. We act as the brand guardians, ensuring that every applicant, whether they get the job or not, has an experience that reinforces the company's stellar reputation.
